Johnnie began playing bass at age 12 after coming across his mother's bass in his basement.  He was heavily influenced by the Seattle grunge movement during the early 90's and began jamming with classmates during the weekends.  During his junior and senior year in high school he was still playing rock with the addition of punk, ska, and jazz.  He switched from violin to upright bass in his high school orchestra and joined the Winona Senior High School Jazz Band.  He expanded with industrial metal after joining Black Umbrella Cult in 2001 while moving to Minneapolis to continue his punk/ska chops with Midriff, of which 8 Switch drummer Casey Palbicki was a member.  In 2004 Johnnie and Casey helped start up 8 Switch Assembly, now known as 8 Switch.
